A Show of Hands : Using Puppets with Young Children

Description

Puppets are a play-time favorite in countless classrooms. With the ability to capture and nurture a child's imagination, puppets have great untapped potential as creative teaching aids.Disproving the notion that puppets are strictly for play, "A Show of Hands "presents innovative ways for teachers to use puppets as valuable and developmentally appropriate teaching tools. Drawing from over fifty years of combined experience in the arts and education, the authors--one an award-winning puppeteer, the other an arts educator and writer--illustrate how the use of puppets can support emergent literacy skills, introduce children's literature, manage the classroom, and assist in the development of lesson plans tailored to the specific needs of the teacher and class. An ideal resource for teachers from preschool to early primary, "A Show of Hands "also includes helpful instructions for designing, constructing, or purchasing your own puppets, as well as how puppets may be used with children diagnosed with autism, ADD/ADHD, or a hearing or vision impairment.Ingrid M. Crepeau is a founding member of Grammy-nominated Dinorock Productions, Inc. She has been working as a puppeteer/educator in early childhood classrooms for over thirty years. She lives in Reston, Virginia.M. Ann Richards works as a freelance writer for local and national parenting and early childhood publications and has worked in the education departments of many Washington, D.C., area arts organizations. MV Balmoral : The First Sixty Years

Description

Built in 1949 in Southampton for the Southampton, Isle of Wight & South of England Royal Mail Steam Packet Co., MV Balmoral operated in their Red Funnel fleet for twenty years. Moving to Bristol, she became the last vessel purchased by P&A Campbell for the pleasure steamer services down the Bristol Channel and across to Wales. As well as service in the South West, she was used in North Wales too, even making sailings to Douglas in the Isle of Man, where she was used to serve as a tender to Swedish American Line Kungsholm. P&A Campbell ceased trading in 1980 and, after a short lay-up, MV Balmoral moved to Dundee to become a floating restaurant. This move was unsuccessful and she was purchased for use as a pleasure steamer again. In1986, she returned to service and to the Bristol Channel where she still operates today. In 2002 she was fitted with new engines that have increased her lifespan considerably. In conjunction with her stable-mate, the paddle steamer Waverley, she also operates on the Clyde, the Thames, North Wales and from Southampton and the South Coast. Balmoral and Waverley, two ships, markedly different, but built within two years of each other, are a reminder of the heyday of coastal cruising, when many such ships took holidaymakers on day trips to resorts the length and breadth of the country. Alistair Deayton and Iain Quinn bring together, in words and pictures, a celebration of the first sixty years of MV Balmoral's career as a sea-going pleasure steamer.

Gwen Wilson: I Belong to No One

I Belong to No One

Description

Rape, teen pregnancy, illegitimacy, domestic abuse - in the 1970s all were shameful secrets that trapped women in poverty, loss and ongoing emotional trauma. This is one woman's story of all she lost and how hard she fought to survive. A teenager in the 1970s, Gwen Wilson had a tough childhood. Illegitimate, fatherless, her mother in and out of psychiatric hospitals; it would have been easy for anyone to despair and give up. Yet Gwen had hope. Despite it all, she was a good student, fighting hard for a scholarship and a brighter future. Then she met Colin. Someone to love who would love her back. But that short-lived love wasn't the sanctuary Gwen was looking for. It was the start of a living hell. Rape was just the beginning. By sixteen she was pregnant, her ongoing education abandoned. Society did not tolerate single mothers; prejudice and discrimination followed her everywhere. In an effort to save her son, Jason, from the illegitimacy and deprivation she'd grown up with, Gwen chose to marry Colin - and too quickly the nightmare of physical abuse, poverty and homelessness seemed inescapable. I BELONG TO NO ONE is a story of desperate lows, the fight for survival and how it led to one woman's eventual triumph over adversity.

Shooting parties in great country houses, turbulent scenes in parliament and the luxury life in Budapest provide the backdrop for this gripping, prescient novel, forming a chilling indictment of upper-class frivolity and political folly, in which good manners cloak indifference and brutality. Abady becomes aware of the plight of a group of Romanian mountain peasants and champions their cause, while Gyeroffy dissipates his resources I Belong to No One ebook pdf at the gaming tables, mirroring the decline of the Austro-Hungarian empire itself. "Tozer's bestseller, this book has been called "one of the all-time most inspirational books" by a panel of Christian magazine writers."Sometimes the voices that speak most clearly in the presentare thosethat echo from the past. So it is in this Christian classic by the late pastor and evangelist A. W. Tozer.Tozer brings the mystics to bear on modern spirituality, grieving the hustle and bustle and calling for a slow, steady gaze upon God. With prophetic vigor and flowing prose, he urges us to replace low thoughts of God with lofty ones, to quiet our lives so we can know God s presence. He reminds us that life apart from God is really no life at all.Tozer writes from his knees, a posture fit for presenting the character of God in all its demanding grandeur. "Arise, O sleeper!" is his word to us, and yet if we heed the call, we will see that to arise is not to stand, but to kneel before the God of heaven in humble contemplation. To pursue God is to know Him, and in our knowing be drawn in."

Michael Taylor: Rembrandt's Nose: Of Flesh and Spirit in the Master's Portraits

Rembrandt's Nose: Of Flesh and Spirit in the Master's Portraits

Description

The year 2006 marked the 400th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest portrait painters that ever lived, the Dutch seventeenth-century master, Rembrandt. Although Rembrandt is among the most important artists in western history, and perhaps our greatest draftsman, no one has ever, until now, been able to pinpoint exactly how it was that he so precisely and effortlessly captured the spiritual essence of his subjects. This insightful, sophisticated and yet accessible illustrated reading-format study, written by the preeminent scholar and translator Michael Taylor, will be as enlightening and delightful to Rembrandt scholars as to lay readers. Taylor looks at Rembrandt's self-portraits, his society portraits, historical paintings and biblical scenes, and identifies how it was that the artist rendered his subjects so alive, so full of earthy, flesh-and-blood vitality--which all boils down to his treatment of the nose. "Rembrandt's Nose" is a gem of a book, an intimate, candid and extremely entertaining engagement with the works of art themselves, interwoven with racy historical snippets that contextualize the artist's breakthroughs and techniques. It includes some 49 reproductions, as well as a complete chronology of Rembrandt's life. "Michael Taylor creates a series of portraits that are as full of ingenuity, passion, and attention to quirky detail as Rembrandt's paintings themselves. Art history has seldom been so entertaining and enlightening." --Ross King, author of "Brunelleschi's Dome, The Judgment of Paris," and "Michelangelo & the Pope's Ceiling." "Michael Taylor's starting point for this enchanting essay is a feature that is as plain as could be, and is central to the destiny and the mortal features and aspirations of his great subject, the painter. Taylor's meditation unfolds with grace of language and insight, and a familiar use of what can be known now of Rembrandt and the world he revealed." --W.S. Merwin, former Chancellor of The Academy of American Poets and recipient of the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. "Zooming in on the center of Rembrandt's faces, Michael Taylor finds meanings we all have missed. What appeals to me most in his lyrical appreciation is that he writes not only about what Rembrandt's noses look like, but also how they smell and breathe." --Gary Schwartz, author of "The Rembrandt Book." "This is the best kind of criticism: informed without being pedantic, passionate but elegant, witty and earnest at the same time It is worth a whole stack of weighty tomes on the master." --Mark Polizzotti, Publisher, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and author of "Revolution of the Mind: The Life of Andre Breton."

Britt-Marie Was Here

Description

From the bestselling author of the charming debut ("People") "A Man Called Ove "and "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She s Sorry," a heartwarming and hilarious story of a reluctant outsider who transforms a tiny village and a woman who finds love and second chances in the unlikeliest of places. Britt-Marie can t stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at sixty-three, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless forty-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis. For the fastidious Britt-Marie, this new world of noisy children, muddy floors, and a roommate who is a rat (literally), is a hard adjustment. As for the citizens of Borg, with everything that they know crumbling around them, the only thing that they have left to hold onto is something Britt-Marie absolutely loathes: their love of soccer. When the village s youth team becomes desperate for a coach, they set their sights on her. She s the least likely candidate, but their need is obvious and there is no one else to do it. Thus begins a beautiful and unlikely partnership. In her new role as reluctant mentor to these lost young boys and girls, Britt-Marie soon finds herself becoming increasingly vital to the community. And even more surprisingly, she is the object of romantic desire for a friendly and handsome local policeman named Sven. In this world of oddballs and misfits, can Britt-Marie finally find a place where she belongs? Zany and full-of-heart, "Britt-Marie Was Here" is a novel about love and second chances, and about the unexpected friendships we make that teach us who we really are and the things we are capable of doing."

Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures

Description

Holy unanticipated occurrences! A cynic meets an unlikely superhero in a genre-breaking new novel by a master storyteller. It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw it coming - the vacuum cleaner, that is. As for self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, she has read every issue of the comic book Terrible Things Can Happen to You! so she is just the right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight and misspelled poetry. And Flora will be changed too as she discovers the possibility of hope and the promise of a capacious heart. From #1 New York Times bestselling author Kate DiCamillo comes a laugh-out-loud story filled with eccentric, endearing characters and featuring an exciting new format - a novel interspersed with comic-style graphic sequences, plus full-page illustrations, all rendered in black-and-white by a talented new artist.

At the bitter end of the 1960s, after surviving multiple assassination attempts, President John F. Kennedy has created a vast federal agency, the Psych Corps, dedicated to maintaining the nation's mental hygiene by any means necessary. Soldiers returning from Vietnam have their battlefield traumas "enfolded"-wiped from their memories through drugs and therapy-while veterans too damaged to be enfolded roam at will in Michigan, evading the Psych Corps and reenacting atrocities on civilians. This Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures download book destabilized, alternate version of American history is the vision of the twenty-two-year-old veteran Eugene Allen, who has returned from Vietnam to write the book at the center of Hystopia, the long-awaited first novel by David Means. In Hystopia, Means brings his full talent to bear on the crazy reality of trauma, both national and personal. Outlandish and tender, funny and violent, timely and historical, Hystopia invites us to consider whether our traumas can ever be truly overcome. The answers it offers are wildly inventive, deeply rooted in its characters, and wrung from the author's own heart.

Description

Anna and Grandma are planning a surprise for Dad's birthday. Dad thinks he has received all his presents, Grandma stands up and gives him the best one of all: she reads aloud the stories that Anna has taught her. "A plug for literacy is just the bonus; the real focus is on the lessons old and young share when they learn to read each other's hearts." -- School Library Journal, starred review

"When Trixie Matkowski agrees to take over her aunt s diner, she pictures lakeside views and delicious comfort food in the small The Wednesday Surprise pdf town where she spent summers as a child. But the sweet scene turns sour when someone puts murder on the menu " When Molly shares a secret with Olive, the urge to tell is just too great for Olive. She tells Joe who tells Matt who tells Lola. But Lola is best friends with Molly. The secret is out, and Olive is in big trouble! With adorable childlike characters in their mannerisms, behaviour and dialogue, young children will relate and parents will laugh at how well-observed they are. Sir Robert Rannaldini, the most successful but detested conductor in the world, had two ambitions: to seduce his ravishing nineteen-year-old stepdaughter Tabitha Campbell-Black, and to put his mark on musical history by making the definitive film of Verdi's darkest opera, Don Carlos. As Rannaldini, Tristan, his charismatic French director, a volatile cast and bolshy French crew gather at Rannaldini's haunted abbey for filming, it is inevitable that violent feuds, abandoned bonking, temperamental screaming, and devious plotting will ensue. But although everyone wished Rannaldini dead, no one actually thought the Maestro would be murdered. Or that after the dreadful deed some very bizarre things would continue to occur. "Score!" is Jilly Cooper's most thrilling novel to date.

Description

"If you'd like to be chilled to the bone and be freaked out for several days afterwards, then go for it! Psychologically, it plays in your mind and you'll realize after reading it, that it's still there. Lurking behind you." - Ink of my heart book blog. "Caroline Mitchell's story of paranormal encounters in her own home is simply astonishing, mesmorising and scary. The fact Caroline had the bravery to expose and reveal this unusual phenomenon while still being a police officer is quite courageous. I highly recommend this extraordinary true story." - Uri Geller "Caroline Mitchell reminds us that the truth is indeed stranger than fiction, and events of extreme strangeness are rarely as well witnessed and well described as in this remarkable book." - Guy Lyon Playfair. An innocent family finds itself completely helpless against the sudden onset of paranormal activity in their quiet rural home. A knife embedded in a kitchen cupboard, crockery smashed by invisible hands, and blood-chilling growls emit from thin air. Caroline and her husband Neil search for answers as they try to protect their family from the unseen entity that seems determined to rip them apart. The biggest question looms over them like a dark cloud ... who is going to help us? There are emergency services for many things, but not of this nature. It might be easier to believe temporary insanity, if not for the vast amount of witnesses. Police, fire services, mediums, priests and investigators all become embroiled in the mystery. The family struggles to cope, and Caroline grows concerned for her husband's failing health as he withdraws from the world. However, the entity has only just begun. Paranormal Intruder is the true story of one family's brave fight against an invisible entity. Described as one of the best-documented cases of paranormal activity, this page turning book will stay with you long after you have finished reading it.

Jessica is thrilled for the opportunity to visit her dear friend, Scotland Yard Inspector George Sutherland. The accounts collected here provide a vivid narrative of his voyages throughout the Caribbean and finally to the mainland of Central America, although he still believed he had reached Asia.
